Pros

- Good company to work for if you're NOT in sales - mediocre benefits - Comp structure is pretty generous, if you get lucky with inbounds and a decent patch, there's some real money to be made here

Cons

This is hands down the absolute worst company I've ever worked for. I wish I would've taken the Sales Glassdoor reviews seriously, but they talked a big game during the interview process, and I made the mistake of trusting them. Don't be me. This job has sucked the absolute soul out of me, and there's no sign of it getting any better any time soon. Here's a list of the worst offenses so far; - Super cliquey teams that you WILL be excluded from - Extremely competetive mindset that drives wedges between the teams and teammates - Absolutely zero leniancy for anything - Managment will absolutely play favorites with more tenured reps - There is no consideration for inbounds, you will be compared to people getting 3-5 closed/won deals from inbounds ONLY with no consideration - Management talks a big game of caring, but at the end of the day they don't. There isn't any assistance, they tell you you're doing great until suddenly you're the worst employee they've ever had, and they let you know. - Absolutely NO ONE is hitting quota, maybe 5% of the floor and most of them are hitting it due to inbounds - Patches are awful. They force you to work accounts that have no use case or budget, and get upset when you try to ask about getting new accounts - The micromanagment culture is absolutely rampant. If you don't do things or say things exactly how they want you to, you're in trouble - On the flip side, if you ask for too much advice or feedback, they'll sit you down and have a long talk about how you're not an "indapendent rep" - Turnover rate is astronomical. There's a reason all these people keep leaving. Please, please PLEASE take these reviews seriously, and don't make the same mistake I did. Run far, far away from this company and never look back.

Pros

I get to work with smart+conscientious people, the compensation is very good, and I think the core product is quite good (there's a reason people pay for it). I enjoy most days at work despite my complaints below.

Cons

Virtually every developer at Datadog shudders when they hear the word "Bazel". Our approach to developer experience is so, so, broken. There's an expectation that people should build new products in (one of the several) large monorepos, but actually getting things done in those repos is brutally slow. Just launching or testing your backend service involves waiting ages for Bazel to compile a ton of unrelated code. On top of that, we have to use a lot of bad, underdocumented, proprietary developer tooling. If you want to spin up a new REST service/Postgres instance/whatever, expect everything to take 5-10x more effort and time than it would elsewhere. You will spend more of your time learning how to do things the some-internal-team way than actually solving business problems. Edit-compile-run loops are often an order of magnitude slower than they would be at other companies. This mess is sometimes kind of *interesting*, but it is definitely not a good way to spend software developers' time.
