Pros

Opportunities for internal transfers are common. Management usually leaves you alone if you do your job.

Cons

Layoffs are a regular occurrence. Management is self-serving and usually apathetic. Pay is below standard and raises are often confused with cola's, if they happen at all.

Pros

The people and mission at Merrill are committed to providing the best customer service in the marketplace. Employees who work there tend to stay. Management is very approachable.

Cons

The benefits package is not very generous by industry standards and changes in compensation do not change frequently. It is not uncommon to go a year or more with no pay adjustments. The company grew out of several smaller companies. As a result, there is a lack of consistency among the operation of the various business units.

Pros

Merrill is involved in so many aspects of business that many fields are covered.

Cons

They do not seem to excel in any of those above fields and seem to be satisfied with being "mediocre". "superstar" contributors are not particularly encouraged. The company is very top-heavy. As such decisions take a long time to make and often it is not the right person making the decision. The senior management isn't very equipped to think far in the future, but rather 3-6 months ahead. This means the whole company is always scrambling. I think a change in leadership, with visionary people who are experts in their fields is important.
