Defense Unicorns was, without question, one of the most dysfunctional organizations I have encountered. The core issue lies in its fundamentally broken leadership structure. An insular circle of friends and family was inexplicably entrusted with steering the business, while some of the most accomplished professionals in the industry were brought in only to have their expertise ignored and their talents wasted. The workplace operated as a full-scale clown show. Highly capable employees regularly questioned what they were supposed to be doing and why they had ever left successful roles elsewhere to participate in such an unorganized and chaotic environment. With no meaningful leadership guidance, the employees who were not part of the inner circle quietly banded together, providing each other the support and encouragement that was so clearly lacking from the people who should have been leading the way. Without that peer-driven camaraderie, morale would have collapsed entirely. The CEO consistently made poorly informed and ill-timed decisions in areas of the business where he lacked even a basic understanding. Strategic work was presented, met with enthusiastic approval, and then immediately discarded as the CEO directed teams to move in the exact opposite direction of both expert recommendations and explicit client feedback. This led to a destructive cycle of confusion, rework, and growing distrust from both staff and clients. Adding to the embarrassment was the company's internal obsession with its own branding. While leadership praised it as clever and distinctive, the reality in the market was quite different. Clients and partners viewed the branding as childish and entirely lacking the seriousness required to support the critical missions the company claimed to serve. Employees were routinely embarrassed to wear company swag, which became just another massive waste of money and energy in a long list of misguided priorities. Resources were burned through without any clear strategy or accountability. Financial and human capital were squandered, priorities shifted constantly, and critical work was mishandled time and time again. Leadership showed no understanding of the high-caliber talent they had managed to attract or how to effectively utilize their skills. Defense Unicorns had every advantage. They had the talent, the opportunities, and the platform to build something remarkable. What they lacked was competent leadership, strategic focus, and the ability to operate at the level required for the missions they were entrusted with. Until those fundamental issues are addressed, I would strongly advise anyone considering working with or for this company to think twice.
