Pros

Discounted tires and i lived an 8 minute walk away from my apartment.

Cons

-worked 11-12 hour shifts during winter with one 30 minute lunch and two 10 minute breaks (which is technically legal, but the bare minimum an employer HAS to give you in the state of CO. Most shops in Durango have an hour lunch) - management doesn’t really care about employees as long as they are making money. The most they do is give out redbulls and tell them to go faster. -pretty much non-stop. As soon as one car goes out, another is pulling in. Which is good on a business level, but running techs like this for 11-12 hours is the reason why they have such a high turnover rate. -most of the senior techs that have been there for more than a 6 months absolutely hate it. I was asked a week into working if i hated my life yet. One tech said he’s been there for 5 years and they capped his pay at $22/hr and he's only staying until he has enough saved to start his own business. Another told me he just had a kid and was pretty much stuck there and wanted to leave but couldn’t. -I've been professionally working on vehicles since 2019, and unprofessionally since 2016. But i was told that my previous experience with a technical college (NASCAR Technical Institute) and in multiple shops, dealers, and two race teams (Monster Jam with team Grave Digger and a Ford Performance offroad team that does the Baja1000) did not matter to them, and if i didn’t like it then i could leave. -constantly disrespected by other employees. Not all of them were rude, but the bad outweighs the good All in all, one of the worst shops I've worked for. No wonder Discount Tire hasn’t won the “best place to work” since 2021.

Pros

Not much after founder passed away.

Cons

Discount Tire just isn’t what it used to be. After the passing of Mr. Halle, it feels like the company has forgotten what truly set it apart. Working there used to feel magical built on service, passion, and genuine care for people. Now it feels driven strictly by metrics and profits. The original vision that made the company special has been lost, and in the process, employees, service, and morale have been pushed aside. Someone once told me: “It doesn’t matter if your store sits on the corner of Main and Main what matters is the manager and their people.” But today the focus seems to be on micromanaging instead of empowering. Ideas aren’t heard. Problem solving and decision making have been replaced by “read this script and do exactly what I say.” It’s become command-and-control instead of trust and leadership. I’m still grateful for everything I learned in management at Discount Tire, and I continue to carry Mr. Halle’s five life lessons with me. But it’s hard not to notice the change especially when so many people across the area are leaving to work elsewhere. If I were really the problem, why are so many others walking out the door too? And after taking a knife in the back, it’s clearer than ever that something bigger is broken.
