Pros

The people in the trenches are some of the best that you can work with. Race day free samples! My department leaders were the best in the company, they care about their people and did everything to make the department a family!

Cons

Company decided to cut 255 position at corporate due to their outlook of "possible" reduction in same store year to year sales 3 down the road. They even "laid off" people that have been completely loyal for over 30 years to the company. Laying of people is never a good thing, but to do it when you are expanding at the rate of 700 stores a year is a little harsh. This is the direction of the new CEO that was put in place back in the summer.

Pros

I personally loved my job, I love retail, and I loved my customers. I miss merchandising, I miss my customers. I'm probably the only person, that didn't gossip back and forth between stores about how much they hated their store or their job.

Cons

I always gave 150% and then some everyday, and it always went unnoticed. While the Store Manager did nothing but collect a paycheck, broke every rule, had customers and vendors disliking him, and cost the company significant amounts of money to have a Smart Team come to our store every few months to help us catch up (because he didn't believe he needed to work rolltainers during the morning shift everyday) at which time he was the only one on duty. His laziness also cost us significant amount of money in shrink, all things that never got him written up. This is a terrible company in general to work for as they do not take care of their genuine, caring, hard working, honest employees who really want to be there. They will make you open the store alone, and work 7 hours without relief. Customers would get upset, causing you to work faster to shrink your line, and having possible mishaps with your drawer being over. In which you would be written up. Yet, those amounts and an honest employee, didn't in any way add up to all the overages & shortages of the Mgr. and Associates drawers everyday, expired food and all the totes stacked up in the back room, from items that were never appropriately marked down. Yet, if you're making a high hourly rate of pay, and they need to hire, they'll fire you, in order to hire two people in your place at minimum wage. I was always written up months after the fact of a cash incident. I was told, "we pick and choose our battles" and that I wouldn't be written up. Well when the payroll budget was consistently low, because DG expects you to run a store on less then normal amount of hours needed, they'd pull out their"battles." I'm not the first person they did this too.

Pros

After 11+ years, I can say the two strongest pro's are DG's adherence to its core values and its consistent fairness and equitable treatment of its employee base. Tactics come and go, but fundamentals and strategies remain focused to those that interact with our customers every day.

Cons

Due to high growth, leadership at the mid and upper levels seems to change frequently. This is a challenge in that folks are constantly in a training / learning curve, and this takes away from overall progress at times.
