Pros

Having a job while you look for a career with a good company. Medical benefits. Some really nice people are stuck there because they don't know what it's like working for a real general contractor. Get out! life is much better on the outside!!

Cons

Micro-management. Poor decision making by executives that have little to no construction experience. Be ready to work a lot of hours. Be ready to be the scape goat for managements poor decision making. They will dictate means and methods on your job site against your warnings then back away and leave you with a huge mess.

Pros

Offers incredible amount of training opportunities that the company will pay for. Company culture is set up in such a way that younger folks get a lot of opportunities and responsibilities that you normally wouldn’t at other comparable companies. Some very talented people. I felt pay was great, above average for industry. Great bonus (most years). Lots of opportunities to get on the job site. I believe next round of senior management and president are great people and will bring great things for the company. Company lays out really well your promotion goals so you have something to work towards. Yearly salary increases based on merit.

Cons

No real safety program or safety training. That was biggest surprise when starting. Regular travel to job sites could get obnoxious and hurt work-life balance. Company has sometimes been known as an accounting company who also builds things. I found this to be an accurate description. Accounting processes are way over the top and in many cases time wasters. Most of the accounting folks I got to know felt the same way. Internal processes sometimes got in our own way. Many times contractors were not getting paid in a timely fashion and it was not the contractors fault, it was our own processes. I’m never worked for a company with such tedious accounting and I’ve worked for far larger companies/corporations. The downfall of the promotions schedules is I feel some people were promoted too soon and my own promotion schedule was often unrealistic. Average age of project managers is much lower than most companies leading to inexperience compared to other similar contractors. More senior level project managers with more experience are needed. Lots of turnover.
