Another year, another layoff

Pros

I don't have to work there any longer.

Cons

Where would one start? Starts at the top with Costa and his cronies. Yet another year and more layoffs and forcing longer term employees out the door with VSPs. Meanwhile Costa and the ET minions receive millions in stock and salary compensation, while the Circular project continues to be a nightmare and everyone knows it.

Pros

The people for the most part remain the advantage Eastman holds. I know a lot of companies say that (e.g. "we have the best team and we can win this!"), but I genuinely felt that way about my peers upon joining Eastman. Not so much for their capabilities- which I thought were on par with those I experienced at other chemical companies- but for their added empathy and the overall good culture. That has been trending negatively, but still remains a large reason why I remain.

Cons

The vision that is communicated from the Executive Team straight through the ranks lacks substance and everyone can feel it. Even the team members in the flavor-of-the-month businesses lack enthusiasm and this is even more pronounced among businesses receiving less investment. Below the Executive team, business leaders seldom have the bravery or ability to manage expectations upwards. I am all for challenging ourselves to stretch but goals are often disconnected with reality. Compensation is great for newcomers but once we have you, forget about base compensation increases above GDP or for role changes. The salary you negotiate upon your hire is what you are stuck with plus 3% give or take the rest of your career.

Deteriorating Culture

Pros

Decent benefits, fair pay, good work life balance

Cons

We got a new CIO about a year ago. That CIO openly admitted to lying about reorganizations and restructuring in an open Q&A session. Company culture is shifting to be a lot more cut-throat with relative performance assessments (forced ranking with set targets for number of people 'not meeting' expectations). Some leaders outside of IT are able exert too much influence over how IT recognizes and promotes talent. Most frustrating recently is when the least competent candidate is selected for leadership potential and despite constantly making poor choices (leading to high performers leaving the company), nothing is done about it.
