Pros

The mission of the company is very inspiring. Financial Engines provides top-notch investment advice to thousands of people for a fraction of the price typically charged by investment advisors. Employees are passionate and unified in this mission.

Cons

The executive management team consistently overcommits which results in people being stretched too thin. This leads to mistakes and re-work and ultimately slows things down. Morale is also down because people are burnt out.

Pros

Unlimited PTO If you're a fan of corporate theatre, you'll enjoy the daily performance of enthusiastic brown-nosing. It's truly a masterclass in flattery under pressure.

Cons

If you're considering working at this financial planning company—don't. Especially if you're thinking about joining the Product or Design departments. The culture here is beyond dysfunctional; it's outright toxic. Managers regularly gaslight employees, take credit for their work, and then make minor tweaks just so they can pass it off as their own to leadership. It’s a flat org with no room for growth, yet somehow you're still expected to do the job of your manager—particularly in Product and Design—without the title, recognition, or compensation. Taking paternity leave? Be prepared to be guilted for it—leadership actively discourages it. There's a deeply embedded culture of throwing people under the bus, and blame flows downwards while praise flows upwards. Worst of all, the team culture is laced with off-color jokes and inappropriate comments from senior leadership that go unchecked. HR is either ineffective or complicit. What’s most disturbing is how normalized all this behavior is internally. They pitch themselves as a “fast-paced” or “lean” organization, but it’s really just code for burnout, exploitation, and psychological manipulation. Avoid this company if you value your mental health, professional growth, or basic respect in the workplace.

Pros

Good place to get feet wet in the industry. Use this company as a place to get started then jump off after three years.

Cons

Advancement is gone. No one knows what is going on. All the talented people are leaving to go be actual planner and current planners are jumping off to other firms to be actually paid for the work they do. Company has no direction any more. Upper management is clueless. We have issues with advisers giving fraudulent advice but no actions are being taken. There is an inherent conflict of interest despite fiduciary status. Goal is to get people to planners weather or no it makes sense. They put the standards intentionally unrealistically high so keep from paying the highest bonus payout. People who bring in the most money are not compensated. It's not the same company anymore. Don't know why they even keep the name. In less than three years it went from one of the best companies in the industry to a joke.
