Pros

Benefits are good; compensation is a little higher than average; lots of holidays (Columbus Day!?! Earth Day!?!?)

Cons

Bad place to work if you're not in the 'tribe' ... full of people who've been there for years just riding the wave ... everyone else is a minion and is treated as such. Seniority is rewarded more than merit. Suffers from title inflation. If you're a Director here, you're really doing Manager work. Executive Directors are more like Sr. Managers. VPs are more like Directors. That's how they are able to hire and keep folks, especially in this economy -- title & salary inflation. Tons of bloat, churn, busy-body work, overhead, bureaurocracy, ridiculously detailed tracking of even the most mundane tasks, convoluted technical environment(s) that make launching anything quickly and productively nearly impossible. Clings to what the Internet was and how it worked in 1998 ... very slow to embrace new technologies and platforms. If the curtain could be pulled back on this enterprise, competitors would laugh, then shudder in disbelief. Tries to claim to be an "Agile" environment, but really it's just waterfall in sheep's clothing with a lot of busy work attached. The reason people never leave is they are ill equipped to handle a position out of Edmunds. A lot of how Edmunds works is only applicable at Edmunds. You are not marketable after leaving their archaic set-up. Micromanagement at every level -- most bizarre thing I've ever seen.

Pros

The usual big company perks: fairly good salary, full benefits, 4 weeks vacation, and some degree of flextime.

Cons

Management is quick to fire people. Some describe the culture as backstabbing. Certain departments are overrun with unfriendly people of marginal talent. Creativity is discouraged and most work is tedious, leaving little joy or satisfaction in what would normally be a fulfilling job.

Pros

Cool building and a lot of free food.

Cons

I was told that I would be able to learn SQL and a lot of other useful skills that would continue to help me grow professionally. Additionally, I was told that the work life balance was great due to their ROWE policy. I was also advised that their training was top notch and that they would allow me time to learn the role while providing attainable performance goals. This was not my experience. In terms of useful skills, this role was 50% waiting on hold from external inventory providers, while the other half was doing endless task from a queue to fix various discrepancies on the Edmunds.com website. I never dealt with databases or SQL EVER. Next, the ROWE policy is an excuse not to give employees time off. Result oriented work environment. If you get your work done, you get time off. Sounds good unless you are never done with your work. I worked 60 hours a week at that office and had to take home a laptop and do additional work after I got home. Its a salary position so forget about OT. Finally, the training I got was rushed, non specific, and from individuals who had worked there multiple years and didn't want to train people. Not to mention half the people in the department were fired while I was there. Fortunately, I found a job and quit before I received the boot as well. Those were all hard working and intelligent people who didn't deserve the treatment they got.
