Good benefits but progression is limited

Pros

Most departments offer flexible working with the option to adapt hours or work from home when needed. There are good private medical insurance, pension and share option schemes, and the option to buy up to an additional week of annual leave.

Cons

Chances to progress are limited. Nobody knows what anyone else earns, and job vacancies never have salaries attached to them so it is not easy to identify whether a position is at your grade. Senior positions are often appointed with no advertising.
