Pros

Your experience really depends on your match with your lab. My experience was very positive and I ended up learning a lot while I worked there. Great chance to be surrounded by people who are passionate about their work.

Cons

Some people can come off as quite pretentious, but this does not apply to all. Depending on your lab it may be hard to implement your own ideas especially if you aren't considered primarily responsible for your project. Some people want a pair of hands rather than a contributing member, but I'd say that is closer to the exception than the rule.

Cons

Overworked and underpaid. Some practices border on employee abuse.
