Pros
Great research community in the life sciences. Access to facilities, equipment, and collaborating faculty is superb. Actual research experience depends a lot on your PI but the university environment is excellent and funding agencies will adjust scores accordingly when they review your grant applications. Stipends in life science are good given relatively low cost of living in Atlanta.
Cons
PhD student benefits have gotten worse every single year in terms of health insurance: no more vision, no more dental, no more adding dependents to your health insurance. Also no childcare benefits for PhD students with kids.
