False Hopes - Temp QA Tester 2K Employee Review

Pros

This is one of the studios that had the shortest amount of "off time" before you were allowed to return as a contract tester. The interview process and written portion work well to weed out people who were not cut out for testing. That coupled with the full week of actual training gave the rest of the team a relatively good idea what type of person was added to the team. Pay was competitive, at the time.

Cons

As a temp tester there was no room for growth, but there was no shortage of promise for growth. Management would set goals as to what they would like to see to consider an individual to be converted to RFT (full time employee). The goals were not unrealistic, however the senior testers and leads would stack the test plans and assignments so that the people who already had full time positions were the only ones who had a fair chance to reach those goals. Towards the end of my last contract with 2K, I was able to meet the criteria set to become an RFT despite having the odds stacked against me. In the end I was told that due to an attendance issue that I had on one of my previous contracts (about 2 years earlier), I was not eligible to apply for the position.

Pros

Congratulations on joining an IT department sustained primarily by optimism and certificates whose expiration dates invite reflection. Tickets enter a triage process best described as ceremonial — acknowledged warmly, processed philosophically, resolved at the discretion of the universe. Infrastructure decisions suggest a confident autodidactic energy that formal training might have tempered. Your recommendations will be received, appreciated verbally, and composted with dignity. The company charges a premium for its products and charges again for the remainder of them, which is either visionary pricing strategy or a personality trait depending on your tolerance. The gaming chairs are ambitious. The retention numbers are instructive

Cons

• Your labor props up a machine that monetizes joy incrementally until joy is gone • Every unresolved ticket is a monument to institutional indifference • Heidegger called it thrownness — you were thrown here specifically • The infrastructure will outlive your dignity but not your burnout • Mark Fisher already described this place in Capitalist Realism and did not recommend it • You will achieve nothing that compounds • The servers go down. You stay down longer.
