Pros

They will pay for study materials for any type of certification test. If it is your last option, you can get a year or two of experience coming out of college, but upward movement at the company is very limited so I wouldn't want to stay longer than two years.

Cons

All of the junior employees are micro-managed and their input is rarely asked for and never listened to. Leaving work early for personal reasons and taking vacation is look at negatively. There is a sense that if you don't staying until 6:00 then you aren't working hard. Mid year and year end reviews serve no purpose in determining what kind of raise or bonus you will get. Don't expect to get more than a 1.5-2% raise every year and what the president thinks of you will decide your bonus. Very high turnover in junior roles results in people having to perform multiple rolls until a replacement can be found. Doing these extra jobs is hardly ever noticed or rewarded. Management has little idea what work their employees do on a daily basis and only care when it could make them look bad. Many managers will take credit for what their employees do in order to get better bonuses and won't pass along any of the benefits to the employees actually doing all the work. The president will walk around the office all day disrupting everyone while they work. He also will look at your computer screens to make sure that you are working. This will happen at least 15-20 times a day. Hard work and merit hardly ever get factor into an employee getting promoted. The only time someone will get promoted is when someone quits, which is fairly often, and the president considers you to be "on his team". If you are in a back office roll, keep you expectations very low for year end raises and bonuses since those departments are looked down on by the president. No matter how much time and effort you put in, you will likely be disappointed. There is hardly any turnover in higher level positions which greatly limits the amount of upward movement a new employee can expect with their 40|86 career. Hardly anyone will express their opinions or ideas if they disagree with the president for fear that he will take away their bonus. This leads to a very narrow thought process throughout the company and also kills any good idea someone may have.

Pros

The culture is amazing-everyone works hard but is very friendly and collaborative Salary and benefits are very competitive Very flat organization-can walk into anyone's office anytime and they will stop to listen Good advancement opportunities No micromanaging-the focus is on results Flexibilty They have snacks for the whole company several times a weeks (pizza, wings, fruit and veggie trays, nuts, pastries, coffee, hot chocolate, etc.)

Cons

People get hung up on what the "norm" culturally should be and anything that falls outside that is wrong This can be a pro or a con depending on who you are but 40|86 isn't very structured, there aren't a lot of defined ways of doing things, specific trainings or red tape. I personally flourish in that type of environment but some people would prefer the structure.
