Pros

The insurance and pension plan

Cons

You have to deal with indecisive people and managers who take the supervisors side when they’re in the wrong. Your coworkers talk about you like a dog and the supervisor’s condone it and laugh at you right along side them. Your coworkers also see you loading freight wrong they will gossip to others about you and won’t help you but tell the supervisor on you. The managers play favorites and give good work on the dock to the guys they “buddy’s with” you have to wait until you get enough seniority to drive and won’t be able to unless it gets far down in senority where people can drive & they need drivers for the day you have to bid for a driving, hostling, or dock bid by senority no problem but the senior guys there don’t want to quit & you are forced to work the dock for more than 5 years until you get a driving bid. No more overtime! Do not go to ABF if you want to drive you will be disappointed! The union takes management’s side therefore you left in the cold they let you get written up and leave you asking questions on why we have a union. The union doesn’t speak up in meetings when management enforces things that aren’t union policy and they let things happen until it becomes a severe problem.

Pros

Low stress environment. No cost Healthcare benefits. An amazing Defined Benifit Pension. Terrific Company to work for.

Cons

Working on a cold dock in the Winter with do doors. Some workers that don’t appreciate the benifits of working under a Teamster contract.

Pros

Pay is best in the business. $100,000+ first year as a road driver. Year two I made $107,000… and took two months off for cancer surgery. Year three I made $129,000. I average 2-3 nights per week in a hotel. Usually only 1 night out then back home the next day. Frequently running turns (home at end of the run). Insurance is free and EXCELLENT coverage. I paid $1,000 total out-of-pocket for cancer surgery.

Cons

Not much life/work balance. Frustrating spending time on the extra board waiting to get a call to go to work, but with more seniority you get less wait time.
