Pros
Office manager is the title. That person actually wears many hats so it is a great place to learn those other jobs. Sadly, the sales aspect is the only thing corporate rewards.
Cons
There is a story about a little bird that was all alone without a nest in the middle of winter. It fell off the tree and landed in cow manure. The manure kept it warm. Then a human walked by and pulled it out of the manure. The bird died from exposure. The morale: not everyone who gives you manure is your enemy and not everyone who pulls you out of it is your friend. The franchise is advertising that you need not have experience with the industry to buy a franchise location - a theory that educated business leaders would tell you is a recipe for trouble. Unfortunately, anyone can buy a franchise if they can put up the money and there is no legal standard to prove that they can run a successful business not even if a business model is given to them in a box. Every leader makes mistakes, and not ever manager is capable of managing much less leading. Most small businesses will fail in the first 2 years of being open. While others, start franchises because they genuinely care and have the energy, the time, the money and the engagement to take a business and create jobs and a meaningful relationship with the community. Because each location will sink or fail ultimately due to the experience of lack of on the part of the owner, as an employee, it will be your job to either help them win the ball game or else coach someone that doesn't want to be coached. My suggestion to future applicants is that during your job interview, you should prepare a list of questions to help you judge what kind of business owner you will be working for. Get your job description written out in writing to include any other hats you will need to wear and negotiate the salary to match. Will this person empower you to be a leader when they can not be present or will they handicap your growth and try to control a system they do not understand? Do they understand the industry they just entered from a legal perspective or will they insulate themselves from the problem until it winds up in a costly lawsuit? 90% of all businesses encounter a lawsuit during some time in their lifespan. It has been said that it is the job of the employee to make the boss look good. As a management level employee to the only other local manager (the location owner) will they listen to you and are they prepared to understand that your advice is only to look after the good of the company, or do they merely tell you they will listen. I was told I wasn't confident enough to be a leader and that I was almost not hired. Then I was told that I needed to be taught about leadership and that local leadership would teach me. Then I was told I was some kind of threat to local leadership simply because I was in charge of book keeping. Then I was told I was giving up on the staff to want them to actually work for their paychecks instead of sitting home doing nothing, or getting a second job that would then prevent them from coming to work. I was told it was giving up on employees to want them drug free and trained. I was discriminated against for showing leadership traits as a woman and given words like bossy or nag to punish me for the same traits that are seen as leadership material in men. Having worked in the trades, I have seen how often lawsuits can happen, even when the customer is either in the wrong or the grey area of a law. Asking employees to do their job that they agreed to by documenting the job was in no way a dereliction of duty on my part - especially as I was told that I almost didn't get the job because it was assumed I did not have the confidence to lead grown men who didn't want to do their jobs. I'm pretty sure I had the legal basis to hire a lawyer - but had I got my job back, I still would have been dealing with the same level of management, and now they would resent me even more. Had I worked for the other location, the experience would have been different.
