Pros

Projects are mostly local and not complicated. Hours can be flexible. Many of the people there have families and are flexible with that. The bonuses can be sizeable if they make their margins. They give you plenty of money into your Health Savings account on the high deductible plan.

Cons

The biggest cons is that if you don’t land a supervisor you get along with there is nothing you can do but leave. Second issue is that leadership won’t deal with their legacy issues. Leadership is trying to change the good ole boys club but are taking a hands-off approach. I think it’s because they don’t want to fire their friends. There are several old school PM’s and Superintendents that do whatever they want. As a MEP manager you are expected to take them on and change their behaviors as only a few of them follow the new corporate procedures. At one point I had a senior PM tell me he does not care about the rules. He has been here so long and makes money on every project that they won’t do anything to him. In the end the job was to change the culture and manage MEP but the problem was not having support from leadership and supervisors. There was a tremendous amount of pressure from corporate to make them change. You can be out on a limb by yourself arguing with seasoned people. Between a rock and a hard place on every project. It’s awkward at best and made me feel like I never fit in. I was in constant conflict with people and had little job satisfaction. Lots of turnover in the last year. Low 401K High Deductible Health Plan. Few career opportunities due to being a small company.
