Pros

Generally, the company highers individuals of high caliber and above average intelligence with strong work ethics. This makes for a pleasasnt work atmosphere and ease of association amongst teams and across departments. It is fascinating that this profile exists across a culturally diverse employee base and is interesting to observe how a 'we can do anything' coupled with a 'get it done' attitude can pervade acros all nationalities at the company.

Cons

As typical of any large organization, factions develop and maintaining relationships across the teams and groups can become more important than competence. I have seen excellent individuals impinge their careers by not accepting a '90%' solution because they new it could be better. (Nobody does '80%' at APD). Worst problem is the occasional quasi competent who ingratiates themselves to a rising star and causes corporate damage until eventual exposure (one individual rode the star for near 15 yrs before losing the umbrella and departing the company). Somewhat typical Fortune 500 politics.

Pros

I learned a lot from the teams I worked with over my tenure. If I was particularly interested in learning about certain parts of the business, I was often allowed to tackle those challenges. Mentors were very helpful and encouraging. I enjoyed the people I worked with and they always tried to open doors into other parts of the company I was interested in.

Cons

If you want to be doing mostly pure mechanical design work, there is less of that available at Air Products. Lots of opportunities for operations, project management, and EPC roles for mechanical engineers, and pressure vessel work from my perspective. In the initial round of placements, you get matched to one team (you can join or not) — it was not exactly my cup of tea from a day to day work perspective. Second round, I was able to join a team where I absolutely loved doing the day to day work.
