Great company but a pressure cooker - Senior Software Engineer Akamai Employee Review

Pros

Well-managed company that treats its employees well with profit sharing as stock options and all work is "flex base", that is, no distinction between remote, hybrid or on-site. Executive management seems to have a pretty clear vision of the company direction and strategy and is executing well. Top-level engineering talent. Should be in a better position than most tech companies to handle the "AI Apocalypse".

Cons

Can be a pressure cooker, high expectations, the usual periodic layoffs. A smaller company that is not as nimble as it should be for its size. Tom Leighton, the CEO, is fantastic but is getting on in years...will his successor be able to continue leading the company at the same level or will the company lose its way and tank once Tom steps back.

Pros

Genuinely collaborative culture with talented, supportive colleagues across sales, marketing, and technical teams. * Strong work-life balance and flexibility compared to many companies in the cybersecurity industry. * Meaningful products and technology with a strong reputation in the market. * Employees are trusted to own their work without excessive micromanagement. * Good benefits and a people-first culture that generally prioritizes employee well-being.

Cons

As a large organization, decision-making can sometimes be slow and require alignment across multiple stakeholders. * Organizational changes and shifting priorities occasionally create uncertainty. * Cross-functional processes can be complex, which can impact speed of execution.
