Pros

* Amazon has a strong & healthy corporate culture, and I've learned a lot about the non-programming parts of running a service/company. * There are lots of senior technical people to learn from * as you become more senior, there're mentoring & training opportunities * When something breaks, instead of looking for someone to blame they look for how they can prevent it from breaking again in the future. * you'll get experience interviewing & have some say in hiring process for new people on your team * looks good on a resume

Cons

* Mediocre pay, minimal benefits * promotions are super dependent on manager, and the process partially resets every time you get a new manager (I averaged 1 manager per year). * Many Amazonians find easiest way to a promotion/raise is to leave the company & re-apply in 3 years. * annual pay-adjustment is always an inflation-adjusted pay cut, even when you get the highest possible scores on end-of-year performance-evaluation. In years with high inflation, this can be a substantial pay cut like 5% * When Andy Jassy took over as CEO, the only black people in senior management left the company & ever since there's been more homophobia + racism allowed. I think it's still an ok place for LGBT/non-white people to work, but take note of company actions & inactions and maybe set a line for when you'd rather leave the company than be a part of what Jassy is doing.

Pros

Really smart people, a lot of opportunity for growth, always encouraged to be innovative, think big, and create something new. Competitive salary and benefits with other major tech companies. 100% self motivating work environment. No dress code and 4 legged friends are welcome.

Cons

You have to be self motivated. NO ONE will hold your hand and tell you that you're doing a great job. If you need constant affirmations from management, this company isn't for you.
