Pros
Important mission and a wonderful cause. Many of the volunteers are wonderful, dedicated supporters that are a joy to work with. Decent amount of PTO. Healthcare coverage has been good, but the 2018 plans don't look as comprehensive.
Cons
No work-life balance; constant night and weekend hours. ACS loves to talk about family-friendly hours, but what that means is you are somewhat flexible in deciding which 60-70 hours you work each week. Management only works M-F, 9 to 4 and is completely non-responsive outside of office hours. If you have a work-related problem outside of office hours be prepared to handle it on your own and then be criticized for what you did. Layers and layers of middle managers have meetings and create spreadsheets for no reason. Managers never actually help with events. Four rounds of major layoffs in five years; they call it "Fit For Purpose" or "Optimizing" but all they are is layoffs of field personnel to save the jobs of management. Constant upward spiral of complexity of every administrative process so field personnel waste hours on trivial work an office assistant should be handling. No path to promotion. While on PTO, you will still be expected to respond to volunteers and answer management calls and possibly participate in conference calls. Management talks about giving volunteers "freedom" but what they mean is taking away ACS support and hoping the dedicated volunteers will keep raising money.
