Pros

Working for one of the most recognizable and respected agencies in the world. The mission is honorable. Enjoyed getting out and meeting with sponsors and donors. I immensely enjoyed doing educational presentations and recruiting at high schools. Good benefits, company vehicle and generous vacation.

Cons

There is no work-life balance. If you have young children, keep looking. Was not told when I was interviewed what the expectations were in terms of the typical work week hours. A typical work week, if you are doing all aspects of your job and attending your blood drives is very easy 60-70 hrs a week. Rarely is there an opportunity that you feel you can take an entire day off. You do get generous vacation time which looks so good on paper that you salivate, but it is very difficult to take time off. No one in my department is allowed any vacation days in December. This is essentially a sales job where so much is out of your control it is maddening. Recruitment reps work so hard to get donors to show up but then collections can be lazy and not work hard to collect the necessary units. Yet you are held accountable for all of it. Very little accountability or incentives for collections staff. Overall the mission is great but you are expected to do a job that would readily keep 3 people busy for 40 hrs a week.

My experience working with the Red Cross has been great. The work is fulfilling and the people are passionate. Benefits are good - Kaiser is $6 a month!

Cons

There is work life balance, but there is an expectation to work nights and weekends.
