Pros

You can wear your headphones if you're not on the phone. You can wear jeans. And there's a 30 min window before you're marked late to work. Without exaggeration, there are only three pros to this job. Well, you can also count the work/life balance perk because you couldn't care less about this company after you've put in your eight hours for the day. But you will spend all your free time looking for a new job, so depends on how you look at it.

Cons

First, they'll give you a tour and make you think you literally just got hired at Google. Do not be fooled--it's all a sham. They remind you all the time that they were voted the Top 10 Coolest Places to Work... In San Diego. In 2014. They do not pay a living wage. You either need a second job or roommate to share expenses. They do not treat everyone equally, so be prepared for favoritism and overtime going to select few. In Elig, they trimmed their six week training down to two weeks, so you literally have no idea what you're doing. At the end of the two weeks of training, she tells you you're going to "Sink or swim" on your own, and in the same breath will tell you not to worry about your performance. After 23 years in the workforce, I can assure you, she is the worst manager I've ever had the displeasure of working for. She only gives you two weeks to train, but after a year and a half with the company, she doesn't know how to do any of the functions herself. When she's asked to complete something, she gets a minion to do her work so none of the managers have any idea just how little she knows. At some arbitrary date (not based on proficiency), they then train you to add on an entirely different function to your responsibilities--this training lasts all of two hours. They also think telling you to sit and watch over someone's shoulder is an effective means of training. That's called shadowing, not training, and doesn't help when you have no clue what they're doing in the first place. Then, when you are too slow at your new function (the one you were trained on for two hours), the manager starts recording your "coachings" for not working fast enough. Too many coachings and it affects your raise (that only comes once a year), or they just let you go. If the manager doesn't like you, you get more coachings so she can get rid of you. If she does like you (just kiss her butt and you're in), you can literally work two hours out of the day and never get in trouble--go take naps in the huddle room, have relations in the cubicle (you read that right), take two or three lunches, drive off property on the clock... She turns a blind eye for you. Going to HR accomplishes absolutely nothing except she will hate you more. They insist there is a "no retaliation" role, but that's more lies. ASH culture is a joke. Just watch how many people participate in their monthly events. They literally have more people on their committees to plan the lunch hour events than actually participate. Salsa competition... One participant. Desert competition...Two participants. Full on sham. Nobody is happy working their fingers off for $12 an hour. Part of their pitch when you're hired is how they want everyone to advance in their company... More lies. I saw one person, who was there less than a year (against the policy to move up under a year) was advanced to supervisor without the job being posted or anyone else having the chance to interview. Senior management came once while I was employed. She smacked gum the entire time she spoke to the two departments she is over (easily 50+ people). What a joke. Can't show employees the same respect she'd show other insurance company reps.

Thank you for your review on Glassdoor and your perspectives on your job and our company culture. American Specialty Health (ASH) has experienced continued growth and success in its 30-year history. An important component of this success is that the company values feedback. Human Resources and department leadership strive to create a positive work environment for all employees and want to ensure that everyone feels they are trained and equipped in a manner that prepares them to be successful in their jobs. We appreciate your viewpoint about Eligibility training and will check in with our employees in that department to understand whether there is a need for additional training. It’s unfortunate you did not have a positive experience with a visit from a leader on our team. Senior management in our Eligibility department visits our locations quarterly and is open to feedback. If employees feel uncomfortable giving feedback to leadership, they are encouraged to contact HR to offer feedback. We do strive to maintain open, candid communications within teams. In regards to pay, we review our entire compensation/benefits package regularly and we pride ourselves on career growth opportunities and advancement. We have so many stories of employees starting in an entry level job who were promoted multiple times through their tenure, up to the executive level of leadership. We also have many stories of boomerang employees who left the company for other jobs, only to return a year or so later. I am one of them! If you would like to speak more about your concerns please reach out to our head of Human Resources, Kristin Bragg, to schedule a call with both of us. Jason Foggiano, Sr. Vice President, Specialty Networks Operations

Thank you for your ongoing service to ASH. We’re pleased that you enjoy the balance that the remote-first work environment at ASH offers. Supporting employee growth is a priority for us, and we’re proud to see an average of 16% of our employees promoted last year, compared to the national average of 8%. We also acknowledge employee contributions through annual merit increases for eligible employees and a performance recognition program. We appreciate your feedback on offering flexible work hours and invite you to share additional details with your leadership team.

Pros

Work From Home and Make Up Time

Cons

Favoritism, unproductive environment. The department I worked in had a QA who belittled people in the position they just got hired from. I mean said some really hateful things. One of the worst mistakes I made was wanting to learn more and applying for a position. The role paid $15 per hour and I lost every single merit increase I’d ever earned. I liked learning this new role but put myself into debt financially at home for it and now I’m no longer here because somewhere else offered me better money for the same job. There needs to be more improvement on the micromanaging, the culture, the PAY (I don’t care what the company’s research says, the job postings by similar companies say something different). This could be an awesome place to work but the pay and some of the people need to be reviewed. It was like a mean girl club where I was and it’s unproductive and not inclusive to people who are new making a few mistakes and still learning. A good portion of the supervisors are checked out and have no idea how to help you. They just show up because they get paid to be there for maybe 4-5 hours per day. This place needs to come together and needs to actually read the bad reviews and believe them and just focus on improving. Things can get better, the first step is acknowledgement that it’s not perfect.
