Pros

Good benefits and nice San Diego location. Good if you are looking for experience early in your career.

Cons

Non-competitive pay, little opportunity for advancement, out of touch management. Don't trust the "Best Places To Work" title. It's done through an optional survey that most employees ignore. Many of the directors and senior managers were either brought in by former co-workers or started early in the company and were promoted because of loyalty but are unqualified and will never leave.. They would not pay for software developer training. High turnover of good employees. Also, managers are offered stock options and promotions while developers are offered free snacks and foosball. There is a clear culture of developers treated as kids, not as peers. Disregard the boilerplate responses to each review from Human Resources. The company focuses too much on marketing, such as the "Best Places to Work" title, and trying to look good online rather than addressing real issues. There are better companies out there.

Hello, Thank you for your review of your experience at American Specialty Health and your 10+ years of service. We’re pleased that you appreciated ASH’s comprehensive benefits package that includes paid time off, 11 paid holidays, a 401k match, and a wellness program (to name a few). Our culture focuses on employee growth through a robust tuition reimbursement program, leadership mentoring, and training courses through ASH University. In addition, our Tech team members are eligible for external job-related training opportunities, internal trainings with nationally recognized experts like Barry O’Reilly (author of Unlearn and Lean Enterprise), and stock options for certain levels, including Sr. Engineers. Our Tech teams have access to free onsite gyms, games, and complimentary snacks. We are proud of our Tech Engineers, many of whom are long-time contributors and have advanced quickly with multiple promotions over the years. We are also proud to share that our Tech team turnover rate is lower than industry standards. We are sorry to hear that you didn’t feel listened to during your time at ASH. Our suggestions workgroup, ethics and integrity hotline, ASHTech town halls, 360 feedback surveys, and dedicated Human Resource teams at all locations reinforce the culture of an open door policy. In fact, our recent Employee Engagement Survey showed a 70% response rate which is well above the average survey response. If you have any additional feedback you would like to share we would welcome your email to hr@ashn.com. Thank you again for your service and review.

Thank you for your ongoing service to ASH. We’re pleased that you enjoy the balance that the remote-first work environment at ASH offers. Supporting employee growth is a priority for us, and we’re proud to see an average of 16% of our employees promoted last year, compared to the national average of 8%. We also acknowledge employee contributions through annual merit increases for eligible employees and a performance recognition program. We appreciate your feedback on offering flexible work hours and invite you to share additional details with your leadership team.

Pros

Work From Home and Make Up Time

Cons

Favoritism, unproductive environment. The department I worked in had a QA who belittled people in the position they just got hired from. I mean said some really hateful things. One of the worst mistakes I made was wanting to learn more and applying for a position. The role paid $15 per hour and I lost every single merit increase I’d ever earned. I liked learning this new role but put myself into debt financially at home for it and now I’m no longer here because somewhere else offered me better money for the same job. There needs to be more improvement on the micromanaging, the culture, the PAY (I don’t care what the company’s research says, the job postings by similar companies say something different). This could be an awesome place to work but the pay and some of the people need to be reviewed. It was like a mean girl club where I was and it’s unproductive and not inclusive to people who are new making a few mistakes and still learning. A good portion of the supervisors are checked out and have no idea how to help you. They just show up because they get paid to be there for maybe 4-5 hours per day. This place needs to come together and needs to actually read the bad reviews and believe them and just focus on improving. Things can get better, the first step is acknowledgement that it’s not perfect.
