Pros

Game rooms, snacks (not the healthiest), co-workers tend to be young, intelligent, and fun. The CEO seems like a nice guy, and he's enjoyable to be around.

Cons

Salary SUCKS! This is something I've heard from people across departments too! If you're looking for a job here, be prepared for them to lowball you with the salary unless you're going into Sales. Once you work here already, they'll try to promote you and give you way more responsibility with not much more pay. They want you to think they're devoted to you as an employee and say one of their values is to, "Do the right thing, because it's good for business." But they don't pay staff what they are worth for their work. I've also seen a number of people get promoted into new positions and start taking on more responsibilities but not get a pay increase for as long as a month or more! This is mainly in customer success. The explanation for this is that "HR is just too busy" or "HR takes time to pass these things through". But in the meantime the staff is expected to continue working a more demanding position without a corresponding pay increase. That sound like doing the right thing to you? They'll try to lure you in with the cool atmosphere and "perks" like a pool table, and free snacks, but at the end of the day their compensation package is garbage and they regularly underpay. Also the company still isn't profitable yet, so if you're looking at the big picture then that's an issue that can't continue and doesn't look good for the company if they can't turn a profit. There are a number of positions here that are dead end positions that don't really lead anywhere within the company and don't have a clear promotion path. Many customer success managers, some positions in value added services. At the end of the day it's an okay place to work in terms of atmosphere and people, but don't stay for too long because the earning potential simply isn't worth it.

It sounds like you're really frustrated! I encourage you to reach out to your manager or a member of our HR team to share your feedback and better understand your opportunities for career growth. Here's a suggestion to consider as you manage your own career here -- take the time to think about and write down the skills you've built in your current role, think about how they translate to skills that are of value to the company and research some other open positions. Spend time with your manager and walk him/her through your assessment and work together to understand your opportunities for growth. The most successful AppFolio employees are taking charge of their own destiny and I hope you'll reach out to the many resources available here to make this a reality for you as well.

Pros

Frequent team outings and social events that help build relationships across the team. Generally a friendly, social environment!

Cons

The property management team is highly competitive when it comes to promotions, and I’ve seen BDRs remain in the same seat for years or eventually leave, as internal advancement opportunities can be limited. However, for top performers, there is promising upside, and you get to work with some of the best leaders in the organization. On the investment management team, leadership quality is more uneven, and there appears to be a lack of management experience, which has created gaps in coaching, accountability, and overall team development. As a result, performance outcomes have lagged, with the majority of BDRs and AEs struggling to consistently hit target. Team turnover has also been notably high, and leadership engagement only increased after a large portion of the team had already decided to leave, which by that point felt too late to rebuild morale or trust.
