Pros

I used to think AppFolio was the best place to work ever. Very positive culture and during the rapid growth phase there were opportunities to move up. I grew my career here and learned a lot. I met a lot of nice people who I still keep in touch with and consider friends. Very stable environment, even during startup phase there wasn’t a ton of swirl. 401k match Great WLB, you’re not often working past 5

Cons

Another review on blind said it best that AppFolio is a big fish in a small pond. It’s great because it’s in Santa Barbara where there aren’t a lot of options. They get away with low pay by hiring fresh out of college kids who don’t know better (myself included) and indoctrinate them into a culture based on loyalty to the company. I was a longtime employee and absolutely shocked to learn what market pay was when I left. Really cliquey culture, either you’re in and all your friends work there or you’re on the outs. I had bad experience with other managers trying to make me drink to “haze” me after getting promoted. There is a lot of playing favorites. Long time leadership who had a place in early startup kept in place even after creating negative environments. I had some terrible experiences with male leadership absolutely gaslighting. I had heard about them exhibiting this behavior and ruining other employees careers and feared for my own. This took a severe toll on my mental health. It doesn’t seem right to have to go to therapy over the way you’re treated at work. There is an “AppFolio” way of doing things and dissenting voices are discouraged. New leadership are a lot of white males, DEI is a joke. Company is in a place of transition with lots of longtime employees leaving. Stingey with equity for most employees.

Pros

Frequent team outings and social events that help build relationships across the team. Generally a friendly, social environment!

Cons

The property management team is highly competitive when it comes to promotions, and I’ve seen BDRs remain in the same seat for years or eventually leave, as internal advancement opportunities can be limited. However, for top performers, there is promising upside, and you get to work with some of the best leaders in the organization. On the investment management team, leadership quality is more uneven, and there appears to be a lack of management experience, which has created gaps in coaching, accountability, and overall team development. As a result, performance outcomes have lagged, with the majority of BDRs and AEs struggling to consistently hit target. Team turnover has also been notably high, and leadership engagement only increased after a large portion of the team had already decided to leave, which by that point felt too late to rebuild morale or trust.
