Pros

The best employee benefit of working at Applied is the internal education department, that teaches company-specific things as well as life skills (examples include training courses/classes/videos in Excel, Microsoft Project, SolidWorks, materials engineering, how a home loan/mortgage works, leadership/management skills, and more) There's also a gym that employees have almost 24 hour access to, and on site company sponsored workout classes, from cardio to weightlifting to yoga, and off site company sponsored activities (a basketball league, bowling league, softball team, hiking group, mountain biking group, etc) The culture is also great and the people are really nice and helpful Applied has never had layoffs, even during covid

Cons

The starting salary is non-negotiable because they "give people the opportunity to move up fast".... but most engineers take ~3 years to get their first promotion. And the promotions don't come with a pay raise. Overall, the pay is low Bonuses are sometimes discontinued without warning (usually coinciding with a difficult time, like covid) and are never guaranteed. And remote/hybrid work has been discontinued. Everyone is now required to work on site. Applied is pretty strict for salaried employees needing to make up the time or use sick leave if they need to leave 2 hours early for doctor or dentist appointments. And they only give 6 sick days per year

Pros

Gym, benefits, workout classes, company cafe

Cons

The biggest threat to your career here isn’t the workload—it’s the leadership. They’ll talk about transparency, teamwork, and having your back, but when it’s time to take responsibility, those values disappear. Protecting themselves always comes first. Don’t mistake friendliness for loyalty. The people leading the team are often more concerned with appearances, politics, and climbing the ladder than developing the people beneath them. They’ll take credit when things go well and look for someone else to carry the blame when they don’t. Keep your head down, document everything, and trust very carefully. Around here, leadership isn’t earned through merit or integrity—it’s maintained through politics.
