Work with other competent software engineers on demanding projects, though rewards will be quietly intrinsic. - Anonymous employee Applied Visions Employee Review

Pros

Small town setting. Almost a family-like environment. Work with some very talented developers. Management is technically savvy compared to some firms. Some projects require interesting abstract thinking and creativity, though only during certain phases of the work.

Cons

Projects demand long hours, despite limited career path. No B- or C-level management (limited authority, limited delegation of decision-making). There is an increasing focus on classified projects whose limited transparency makes quality and sustainability difficult to assess vs. similar work by peers.

Thanks for the nice things you've said. Things have grown a bit since this was posted in 2011. We do have a shallow management organization, because we're a small business, but growth has led us to delegate more to our senior people. We're not sure we understand the comment about government work and a myopic value system. Perhaps you're referring to the fact that our government work is all research, and that does not always produce a successful (or good) outcome, So yes, at times the quality of the end result may not live up to the hopes we had at the start, but that happens in research: not all ideas pan out. And while some of our work is still classified, the balance has shifted since 2011; most of what we do now isn't classified. In fact, we're doing quite a bit more commercial work than we were doing five years ago, so the mix has changed. We're still enthusiastic about our government-funded research, but our commercial app development has stepped up considerably. So it's a nice mix.

Pros

I started my career at Applied Visions fresh out of school and spent nearly two decades growing with the company. I had the opportunity to work on MANY interesting and exciting projects and learned a tremendous amount about the business and art of building software. The CEO, Frank, was always supportive and genuinely listened to my career goals, making it a place where I could chart my own course. The company strikes a great balance between being small enough to allow for diverse experiences across different parts of the business, yet large enough to work with major clients on impactful projects. It’s a great place for someone looking to build a long-term career and develop a wide range of skills.

Cons

Workload can ebb and flow depending on project cycles.
