Pros
The national guard is different than the reserves because in addition to following federal orders you also follow state orders. So any state emergencies snow, flooding etc you can be called up to go help out. State orders may be more common and easier last minute items to obtain than federal. Thus, they can occur much more frequently in the guard than the reserves.
Cons
Getting placed on orders can be disruptive for family, job, or school. I've known many soldiers that had to drop quarters of school because they got called up for something.
