Pros

AoPS math curriculum is literally the best and most rigorous I have ever seen. It was a joy to teach. Most of the students—a far higher proportion than in any regular school—are highly motivated and interested in math for its own sake. The lessons being planned ahead of time, including the homework sets, is great, and the curriculum team does a wonderful job.

Cons

It sort of feels like the math curriculum team and math classes must be meticulously walled off from everything else going on at the company, because everything else it does is immensely frustrating. The other reviewer on here who pointed out that almost no one in the top echelons of the company has any real corporate experience was dang right. Language Arts is a joke, basically a scam to make money. And everything related to HR, hiring, training, retention, etc., are very poorly handled at best. Notice how the good reviews are all from part-time employees, and the bad ones from full-timers? That's not a coincidence. For someone who is just looking to make a few bucks teaching a fun math class, or as a grader, yes, working at AoPS is fine. But it's an awful place to try to make your career. Particularly if you are full-time but work remotely, i.e. anywhere but San Diego itself, no one will ever listen to you. The company's poor organization means that major issues will go unaddressed, and important questions will not be answered. At the same time, major sudden changes will be announced without warning nor input.

Thank you for your kind words about our curriculum and students. Your review comes at a difficult time, as we are working around the clock to transition our AoPS Academy in-person classes online and support our students' continued learning in the wake of coronavirus-related school closures. However, over the last year we have put special emphases on improving communications between our headquarters team in San Diego and AoPS Academy directors across the country and providing our directors with more support and training. We have also recently invested more resources in building out our HR department and improving our language arts curriculum. Once the current coronavirus crisis has passed, we will continue all of this work.

Though I was hired there in late July 2025 as a Language Arts Instructor, I never got to work in this capacity. After interviewing, coming in for a teaching demonstration, and completing a mountain of paperwork, I was informed that they did not actually have any class/es to offer me, but that I was "welcome" to say on in a substitute capacity. In the nearly year that followed, exactly one substitute opportunity matching my skill set and schedule became available but was snapped up before I could take it. I also received a lot of marketing emails and one webinar invite, as well as an alarming letter from their corporate HR, asking why I had not worked for them yet -- as if I had any control over this! If they wanted to know why I had not worked there, why not ask the person I'd been in contact with, who kept feeding me all these lies? To add insult to injury, in March of this year, they posted another vacancy advert for the same post I had applied for in 2025; when I enquired why, if they did not have anything for me in summer of 2025, they did not offer me this post when it was available, I was given some BS about how they were advertising for their "current campus needs" and thanked me for "understanding" No more "understanding," and I advise everyone else to steer clear of them; they're nothing more than an expensive, fancy version of Phoenix University.
