Pros
Excellent curriculum that challenges students and promotes deep mathematical thinking. Incredible students and families—working with them was a highlight of the job. Supportive and passionate instructional coaches who genuinely care about teacher development and student success. Flexibility to teach remotely, which is great for those with other full-time jobs or commitments.
Cons
Extremely limited hours. It’s difficult to get more than ~10 hours/week, and instructors often compete for teaching slots. This is strictly a side gig, not a full-time or even reliable part-time job. No raises. In nearly three years of consistently strong performance, I never received a single pay increase. This is the only hourly job I've worked where my final salary was the same as my starting salary, and this includes jobs at places like Walmart and Jimmy Johns where I was employed as a teenager. Lack of personalized support at exit. When I requested a letter of recommendation, I was told I couldn’t receive it from the coach I worked closely with, but instead from an unfamiliar HR staff member. This felt impersonal and dismissive of my commitment and contributions to the company.
