Pros

The actual people that work in my store not corporate, not the district managers - my team. They are awesome. My boss really looks out for me. He is a kind man who believes in treating people right and customer service. I aspire to be like him. My coworkers around me I consider my friends. I am lucky to work at a non toxic store.

Cons

Oh man where to begin... In my first month of working here was an angry customer that shot into the store. Thankfully it didn't penetrate the window because he used a small caliber bullet. What an overreaction to us not having a part in stock. One of us could have died. We have been broken into three times since Oct 2021. The Chevy Sonic I drove sounded like a classic muscle car because someone decided to cut the cat. It took a long time for management to fix that. Customers can be very sweet but they can also be rudest people you'll ever meet. They will blame you for things that are ultimately out of your control. They will insult you and threaten you with physical violence. I am very polite but some customers just don't care. This man was threatening to assault me and his wife in the store. What on Earth am I supposed to do a out that? Don't get me started about the theft. We get routinely stolen from. Customers just walk out the door with items. We technically can't chase or intimidate them. But I am a strong enough person to convince people to give the items back. We showed the police stolen items being sold on FB marketplace. Cops did nothing. Like they do for all theft. I don't feel safe working here. Stores like mine in rough areas should have security. Why am I risking my life to sell people auto parts? The harder I work at this store the little rewards I reap. I go the extra mile and give customers the WOW experience. I've changed batteries in the rain, I've pushed customers broken down cars off the road, I have driven my own car to help jump someone's car a mile away and I can't count how many times I've been told I give excellent customer service. I greet everyone with a smile and care deeply about each customer. Yet AutoZone's low pay doesn't reflect that effort. And the raises I will get are meager at best. Everyone at my store works this hard If not harder. When the yearly raises came a manager of mine was given a "raise". Aka they lowered his pay for a day then brought it back to it's original amount. The assistant store manager is still being paid his training pay. Even though he clearly is out of training. He is one of hardest working people I have ever met. Oh God, how could I forget. The computer systems we use are terrible. They have such outdated and clunky UI. The return screen looks like it's from the early 90s. The computer creates multiple versions of a customer. You have to manually look up every version of that customer to find the part they will return . Also the same screen your using doesn't display the part itself only the part number. So you will have to use another computer to search up that part. They recently "updated" the system. It introduced new bugs. You have to use two computers to look up snow chains. It was wasn't like that before. Lastly, a manager of mine called a black employee the N-word. Corporate did nothing about it. Also, before I stated working here. Before any of coworkers were here. The commerical manager stole thousands of dollars in merch. They fired the person who snitched on that manager and not thief himself. Everyone quit after they did that. What on Earth was corporate thinking? Imagine all these issues compounded by the fact that you are understaffed. A clunky complex computer system to fight with, low pay, angry violent customers, petty thieves and a long line stretching all the way out the door. I genuinely love cars and helping people. But this company doesn't give me the tools I need to effectively serve customers. I don't feel safe working here and the low pay is demotivating.

Pros

Pros Automotive Knowledge & Skill Development: It is an excellent environment to expand your knowledge of vehicle components, diagnostic tools, and automotive troubleshooting.Customer Interaction: If you enjoy solving problems, the role offers regular opportunities to deliver high-impact customer service (what AutoZone calls "WOW!" customer service) by helping DIYers get their vehicles back on the road. Networking & Community Connection: You frequently interact with local mechanics, DIY hobbyists, and commercial accounts, building strong professional relationships within the regional automotive community. Clear Operational Structure: The store protocols, inventory systems, and safety compliance expectations are highly structured, making daily tasks predictable and organized. Employee Discount: Workers receive a company discount on parts, tools, and accessories, which is a major perk if you maintain your own fleet of vehicles.

Cons

ConsFast-Paced & Physically Demanding: The environment can be intense and requires significant physical stamina. Employees spend a lot of time standing, walking, and lifting heavy parts (like commercial batteries and brake rotors) throughout their shifts. Retail Hours & Scheduling: Retail schedules can be demanding, often requiring flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays to accommodate peak store hours.Handling Difficult Customer Situations: Because customers often come in stressed about their broken-down vehicles, employees must be skilled at de-escalating tense situations and managing complaints professionally. Split Responsibilities: Staff members frequently have to alternate between multiple distinct tasks—such as inventory auditing, commercial account delivery, and front-counter retail sales—requiring a strong ability to multi-task and switch gears quickly.
