Pros

Amazing group of people on night shift! Everyone was welcoming and ready to help me learn the ropes. BJ's offers 4 day work weeks for supervisors and a great benefits package. Senior leadership is approachable, down to earth and easy to talk to.

Cons

During day shift orientation on Tuesday, I was informed I would start night shift that Thursday. I had not been told this prior. I asked about the training schedule and was informed HR would get back to me. Wednesday during day 2 of orientation I asked again about my schedule and was told Thursday and maybe Friday night for training and then I would report to my scheduled shift on Sunday. From what I gathered everyone is pushed to go to nights the same week they do orientation with no time to adjust your sleeping schedule. This is a problem because it should be disclosed prior to starting. Night shift is short staffed resulting in employees having to work until the job is done... a 10 hr shift turns into 12+ hours a day. Supervisors are stagged with their schedule, but still do 12 hr days. This was not disclosed to me during my interview, as I asked about scheduling and worklife balance. The biggest issue is the lack of safety standards in place for equipment operators. They are allowed to wear hoods which block their peripheral view, not stop at intersections, not look behind themselves when backing up and inconsistently utilize their horns. I felt unsafe walking around the building because of this. When I asked senior leadership about this, I was told it is a culture we have to change. After 2 weeks, I was not provided a training plan and was told it was under review. I was then asked to email them what I learned each day for them the track. They did have a Manager come up from another location to do some training with me and he was great. Despite having yard jockeys on site, Supervisors are required to walk out in the yard and wake up drivers.

Pros

• Weekly Pay • Decent enough benefits for full time

Cons

• The usual retail BS. I don't know what about going shopping people makes people act so poorly but it's very prevalent here. • Metrics are everything. How many membership upgrades and credit card applications are more important then anything else you can provide. We've had management actually accuse people of trying to sabotage store numbers during slow weeks. • Are more then willing to hire new, part-time employees at higher pay then what they are paying full-time employees who've stuck with the company. Hope you like only getting a 0.40-0.50 cent raise each year while a new hire who is treating this as a second job starts at $20 an hour. • Skeleton crew, especially in the afternoon/evening. If anyone in any department calls in, is fired, quits, or gets time off, be ready for the whole store to have to shift to compensate. • Give management an inch, they'll take a mile. If they think you have even an ounce of helpfulness or a need to be a team player, get ready for them to pile work on you, even scheduling you for jobs you didn't sign up for, including managerial work (sans the pay and benefits). • Little-to-no room for advancement. They would much rather hire in new team leads/managers then promote from within the store. This includes hiring people with zero retail or managerial experience. Or they'll just push the managerial work onto an employee and give them nothing in return. • No formal training/curriculum. You job-shadow a coworker for one 8 hour shift and that's it. And your first day will usually always be on a busy Sunday.
