Pros

There are some really great and intelligent people whom have worked for and then subsequently resigned from BTS Research. As one reviewer mentioned, everyone shares a common ground in that we all hate(d) working there. The variety of studies conducted is actually a very positive thing for career growth. However, you won’t be provided training and will have to figure it out. And as another reviewer mentioned, getting your worst job ever out of the way is a good thing. After you move on to another job, you won't take anything for granted anymore.

Cons

Employee retention continues to not be a concern of management. In fact, they actually believe continued high percentage turnover is a good thing. They don't value anyone and routinely badmouth staff after they eventually quit. Responses for requesting of help consist of claims that that is the first they heard of this or odd nonsensical acknowledgements without any real response or better yet - no response at all. Poor decision making, a flawed hiring process, and terrible communication and management skills are what is preventing the company from taking the next positive step. The most amazing thing is that the company has sustained in spite of the poor decision making at the top. What else…Let’s see… No bonuses, sub-par insurance, low vacation allowance, no team building or company activities (no Christmas/Holiday party).

BTS Research Response

Dear ex-employee, thank you for recognizing the intelligent people at BTS and the fact that the various studies conducted are a boost for anyone’s career. As you must have learned firsthand, training is mandatory before any activity is authorized for a technical person. This is reviewed by three levels before it is approved: the IACUC (Animal Care and Use Committee), the Study Director and the Quality Auditor. In a mid-sized organization, it is hard for an employee to make an objective evaluation of the training of other peers, but the minimum requirement is that the participant is trained and that the training is documented before they are allowed to be on the Study. With a great deal of the budget allocated to the new vivarium and renovating the old one, it was not an accommodating time to have an elaborate budget for holiday parties and bonuses, even though merit increases were given during those times. With this behind us, I am certain that it is only a matter of time before bonuses and parties take more focus. I do, however, want to advise you of having higher work ethic, because since the person that posted this claims to be a Research Associate, I can say, as the CEO, that we did not have any Research Associate that worked closely enough with me or HR to have an opinion of me or the hiring process. I do appreciate, however, that you recognize that the company is growing even though you don’t agree with the CEO or the management.

Pros

Great company to grow and learn at a fast pace. One can really pick up a multitude of skills/technique on a wide variety of animals from mice to NHP. Throughout the years, I have had the chance to work along some phenomenal co-workers. There is plenty of work and the opportunity to develop your skillset is there it is up to one if they want to grow or stall. It also allows you to understand the importance of animal research. It also gives you access to be part of the tremendous work that goes behind a study from writing the protocol, ordering animals, ordering supplies, setting up the study binder's/study schedule, working side by side with the client, etc. If one demonstrates they are up for the challenge BTS Research will stimulate your career direction with all the tools necessary to succeed.

Cons

Not everyone that is hired is built for a CRO type of work, so unfortunately many come and go. This is not always a reflection of the company but more the individual that got hired that was not up for tasks. The amount of work and pace is not for everyone.

Pros

Opportunity for overtime, husbandry experience, versatile animal experiences, my supervisor during this time was amazing and showed genuine care about their employees, learned so much

Cons

Lab work never stops, request days off very far in advance, and even then some of it wasn't honored well. This job is not for the faint of heart, research is hard to work in if you aren't comfortable with euthanasia
