Pros

+ Good exposure to a number of different industries in audit + Have an assigned manager (aka your champion) to overlook performance + Have an assigned career mentor to discuss long term general career goals + Lots of different departments in firm to potentially switch over to if interested (valuations, tax, transaction advisory, litigation accounting, corporate finance and much more) + Lots of great socials all throughout the year + Great standards department on top of changes in accounting standards + Lots of young people great place to make friends

Cons

- Promotions structure is strange (1 to 2 years as junior, minimum 2 years intermediate to get to senior). This is one of the largest complaints of most staff accountants. But a lot of managers don't take time to provide advice based on performance to develop to next level (heard HR staff complain a lot about this about managers) - Management style is very inconsistent. Some managers don't prioritize having performance reviews to develop employees. Seem to give initial tools (with good training material) but ongoing training from some champions to develop staff accountants is lacking. Have seen people getting let go without even having performance reviews so the employees would say they had no idea their performance was lacking. - they like to fire A LOT. This is a very well know issue in the firm. Seen more employees get fired here than people leaving of their own accord. Have a lot of friends in PA and don't see nearly as many people get let go in other firms (big 4 other mid sizes or small unless constantly showing up late or something notably bad) - Budget politics is VERY prevalent here, more so than a lot of other firms (especially more than a lot of other mid size and large PA firms). If you're going over the budget a lot of managers will keep an eye on you (you will potentially be on chopping block). Some managers will openly encourage eating (under reporting) hours so the partners can get higher pay for having better looking budgets. Being the most hard working committed employee isn't valued here UNLESS AND ONLY IF you are meeting budget expectations. So don't kill yourself during busy season for a place like this. - No cab available for employees working late like in other firms. So sometimes at 12 I'm taking the subway all the way back to the suburbs (1.5 hour ride) - although there is an overtime policy here for employees working more than 44 hours a week, no managers ever let employees know. It's so hush hush that very few employees know it's available. In busy season you will work 50-70 hours week potentially (the norm in all PA firms) but it's strange that for the year I worked here no managers ever encouraged utilizing overtime hours which seems unfair

Thank you for your comments. You have many positive comments about our culture and how you can develop your career in our firm. Thank you! We are sad to hear that you have experienced our ongoing performance efforts in this way. In the last year, we adapted our performance review calendar to fit the busy season schedule, allowing more time for mid-year and annual reviews. We have a formalized goal setting process in place to allow you to discuss your career progress with your champion. Our new HR system was introduced earlier this year to further facilitate performance reviews. In closing, we encourage our staff at all levels to address any concerns with either their champion or partner directly, or - confidentially - with a member of the HR team, as we want to make sure you have a great experience with our firm.

Everyone was very helpful and welcoming.

Cons

The work was the same everyday. Work skills were learnt but never went into detail in terms of content.
