Pros

I have been working at Beacon as a maintenance supervisor now for almost 6 years and it’s the best job I have ever had in my 20 years in the business. At Beacon it’s very different, there’s a real appreciation for the maintenance department. We are treated with the out most respect and viewed as an important part of the management team. A good example of this is how Beacon responded to the record breaking snow fall we had a couple years ago and again recently this year (2013). The company made sure that we had extra hands on deck and that we rested in between storms so we wouldn’t burn out. And after the cruel winter was over we all received a surprise gift card with a very kind message from the President of the company. This is so different then how I was used to being treated. Beacon also prides itself in providing maintenance with monthly trainings, on everything from safety to capital planning. Last year we learned about mold and air quality, asbestos, project and time management, and efficiencies. We also go to quite a few REAC trainings at least once a year. At some of these meetings we actually work on creating drafts of new maintenance policies as a group. I’ve been in maintenance for over 20 years and have worked for three other property management companies and none of them cares about or appreciates maintenance like Beacon does. Beacon is where I really feel at home and supported - I’ll stay here until I retire. Cons: Not everyone may think that this is a con, but some might. The standards and expectations at Beacon are high, so if you’re a slouch stay where you are – you won’t last at Beacon. On the positive side , Beacon has a very good support system for maintenance staff - if they raise their hand for help they get it. But the accountability and expectations are higher when compared to other companies. A good example is that the company’s goal for REAC inspections scores - it’s 91 or higher. We have done very well in meeting this goal as a company - for the last five years we have averaged over 92. As I said there is a very good support system here.

Pros

Great benefits, so much time off. First company I ever worked for that actually values their employees.

Cons

HR leaves something to be desired. Do not respond with any urgency.

Pros

Early release Fridays Good PTO

Cons

For early release Fridays you end up having to do more work at a faster pace. I worked for my site for the entire year and when they were supposed to pay out a bonus of roughly $13k dollars at the end of the year they said that because I put my notice in they wouldn't honor my bonus. When someone works the entire year and because you take an extra 5 months to close your financials that should not be my problem. Pay people that have rightfully worked for you for the entire duration of the fiscal year. Fair is fair.
