Pros
Outlet means you never know what you are going to get, which can be exciting and challenging. Management (in my store and district) are supportive and responsive- easy to talk to and work with. Job requirements are clear and there are lots of reference books and guidelines to follow if needed. Overall a fun place and as enjoyable a work experience as retail can be.
Cons
Supervisor pay is barely more than minimum wage. no room for advancement at the retail store level. Only 1 manager per store- the rest are only "supervisors" who are expected to run the store and act as management when the manager is not present. Alot of responsibility with very little compensation. Supervisors are expected to be dedicated to Burkes and able to work any shift on any day, yet they are only offered part time and hours fluncuate severely in order to make payroll so management can earn a bonus. Employees have to meet a credit card goal in order for management to receive a bonus. Employees are expected to enroll customers in OneCard (savings and discount program) and meet goals in order for management to recieve bonuses. Failure to do so can result in progressive counseling (write-ups). The store manager, DM, etc all receive bonuses based on the goals the store employees are expected to meet. The store manager does work hard too, but there is that incentive of a bonus dangling in front of them, so the hard work pays off in the end. What do the cashiers and supervisors get for making goals? A $5.00 gift card. :/ The employee discount is only 20%, yet any customer is elegible for a 15% discount when they are enrolled in the OneCard discount program, plus these customers receive points for dollars spent, which results in a $5.00 discount. Employees are not elegible for this program UNLESS they sign up for the credit card- then they can recieve the points, but not the extra discount. So basically employees can only save 5% more than any customer can.
