Observations on My Time at Bio-Rad During my time at Bio-Rad, I observed several areas where the organization struggles, which I believe are important for internal stakeholders and prospective employees or partners to understand. My intention in sharing these insights is to provide constructive feedback and foster dialogue for improvement, not to criticize for the sake of it. 1. Leadership and Organizational Alignment Bio-Rad faces significant challenges stemming from leadership and cultural misalignment. These issues cascade across the organization, impacting systems, processes, and overall strategy. The company often struggles to execute its initiatives effectively, as evidenced by delays, failed projects, and high employee turnover. Leadership's focus on stock buybacks rather than addressing resource constraints or improving employee compensation highlights a disconnect between corporate priorities and employee needs. 2. Performance Culture The organization does not currently promote a performance-based culture. Performance reviews are not meaningfully linked to total compensation, which can demotivate high performers. While there has been discussion of addressing this issue, there’s little evidence of actionable plans or communicated timelines for improvement. 3. Collaboration and Communication Silos are a persistent problem at Bio-Rad, hindering cross-functional collaboration. Only recently has the company begun implementing organization-wide communication forums like town halls. However, these events are often unpolished and reflect underlying tension and disengagement. Improved preparation and a focus on constructive dialogue could make these gatherings more effective in uniting the workforce. 4. Employee Engagement and Sentiment Employee sentiment is a major area of concern. Across multiple departments—including HR, Finance, Quality and Regulatory Affairs, and Project Management Office—there is a noticeable level of disengagement. Employees often report feeling undervalued or neutral about their work, which hampers morale and productivity. Addressing these issues through improved recognition programs, clearer career pathways, and better communication could help foster a more engaged workforce. Bio-Rad has immense potential due to its strong legacy and industry presence, but significant changes are needed to unlock that potential. A greater focus on strategic alignment, employee engagement, and performance-driven initiatives could help the company overcome its current challenges. I hope this feedback serves as a starting point for meaningful improvements that benefit both employees and the organization as a whole.

Pros

I love my co workers and the ability to make my customers happy. Benefits are alright and I do like the products.

Cons

Modern marketing is non existent and the company has been taken over by sweater vest tech bros who feel phony at best. This company is too large to innovate or be nimble, yet too small to acquire new things to sell. Salaries are just so low now that I might need to leave, then come back just to get a pay raise. I’m seeing similar jobs posted for 20% more base than I make 10 years in. No transparency on advancements and annual raises do not reflect effort and making too close to plan on sales just sets you up for failure in the next year. I’d say use this company for a few years then move on.
