Best IT Department I've worked for - Systems Administrator Bloomerang Employee Review

Pros

I cringe at the headline, but it's true. Most of my experience working internal IT it's been a constant fight to get the resources needed to do it the "right" way, and often that fight is lost so all manner of MacGyver solutions, IT heroics, and fire fighting are needed to keep the company running smoothly. This is first place I've worked where the focus is on finding the right tools, automating as much as possible, and constant improvement, not "can we stretch out our laptop fleet by another two years?" It means a lot to me that the leadership has put the faith and resources in our department to allow for a proactive IT department, instead of one constantly in a "reactive" mode. After putting in years at various corporations that, no matter how much I like the people and how good the company was to me, fundamentally had one mission, to "drive shareholder value." At Bloomerang I was somewhat surprised to see that the culture is heavily influenced by our core clientele, the non-profit organizations, and we frequently hire individuals with an NPO background. Being able to contribute to a company supporting non-profits is a perfect "have your cake and eat it, too" situation after working for companies whose clients were often in opposition to my values. The company's people team is always organizing fun and wellness events for employees

Cons

I'm a remote worker in an IT position - I'm not as aware of other departments or what things are like "on the ground" around headquarters, so your mileage may vary. That said, everyone has always been very friendly to me during in-person get-togethers.

Pros

The product is good and work makes a meaningful impact. Great collaboration with peers and team mates. Work life balance can be good- depending on your team and manager.

Cons

Pay is below market and annual "merit increases" do not at all keep up with cost of living increases. If you aspire for a larger increase you can try to generate enough value for the company by creating far more work for yourself but still unlikely. Promotions are rare outside of yearly reviews. I only know 1 person that has had a direct conversation with a member of the ELT. The CEO is deeply condescending and patronizing with a thin attempt at jocularity. The company works with many environmental non-profits but has no stance on protecting resources while pushing more and more AI usage.
