Pros
The work they do enhances national and international infrastructure and the quality of life of the communities touched by their designs. There's a certian pride and prestige that comes with a company with 113 years of experience. The benefits are above average. The ESOP has the potential to make a career employee very wealthy. There may be a lot of opportunity to travel, depending on job role. It's a company full of experienced, talented individuals. There are many opportunities to volunteer, get involved, and move vertically and laterally in the company if circumstances permit.
Cons
- Compensation is below average. - People "below the rank" of engineer aren't treated with an equal level of professional respect, in my opinion. - It's an employee-owned company, but I don't feel any more sense of ownership than I would most other places; I think they espouse the virtues of "employee ownership" to get me to work more for less money. - Some teams are understaffed, presumably to help the bottom line, so it's a challenge to juggle all active projects at once, and it's usually a "photo finish" to get anything done by the deadline, if it even happens. - The employee review process isn't very helpful (see below). - It isn't incredibly inviting: an office full of logical, calculating engineers who are overworked and stressed out, and managers who want things done more efficiently but won't define what that means or how to get there from here. - Constant barrage of media and literature about how great Burns & McDonnell is, welcome or not.
