Pros
This position would work well for someone who has or wants a freelance writing hustle while still bringing in a consistent paycheck, or for someone who wants to build up their writing portfolio but doesn't want a full time position. You will get to write a lot of commerce pieces for Bustle and some of their other affiliate sites, and you'll also learn to write quickly and efficiently within relatively tight editorial standards. It's also a fully remote role, though the company is based in New York.
Cons
While you get a lot of work, much of it feels menial. Think "50 Amazon products that will change your life" - that's literally all the job is. I also never felt fully integrated into the team or company. The only person I ever spoke to on the job was my editor, and it wasn't much beyond polite conversation or "I'm logging on for the day." It would have felt so much less isolating if I had been, for example, in a slack channel with other writers with the same title (and it would have been another resource to go to with questions!) It's also part time. That can be a pro or a con depending on what you're looking for. Training and getting to learn the job can also be a steep learning curve depending on how much previous experience you have. Though I had hoped this job would be a stepping stone into a full time writing role, I found that I didn't have any opportunities to pitch other editors or even connect with anybody outside of my direct editor.
