Pros

The CKM team is quite diverse and especially so by technology industry standards. While the office culture declined recently, I genuinely made new real friends during my time at CKM. Some of the formal and informal social events around the office are enjoyable. CKM has also been a decent entry point into the industry. Many at CKM are new to the areas of data science and development and manage use this as a launchpad for their career. The industry is still ripe with opportunity and with the right leadership that can restore a functional operation against a clear mission there’s a lot of room in the market for success so the potential for the company is still there.

Cons

The current vision and direction of the company is unclear and the new leadership structure is dysfunctional and lacks a defined focus. The company reorganized from a relatively flat structure into a very hierarchical structure with one of the partners taking charge as the CEO. Since that change and under the new org CKM has experienced a significant decline and the company has performed poorly. There is little client work and a constant stream of projects that we are told are about to start and then don’t materialize and are never to be spoken of again. The vibrant culture from earlier days is also gone. Previously CKM saw very few resignations, but under the new structure people are fleeing with a steady stream of very good people leaving for better opportunities elsewhere. One thing driving the departures is that CKM is now very confused about what it wants to be. The leadership always talks about how we are now a product company, but the whole organizational structure is broadly aligned and run like a consulting company with everything revolving around a staffing function that staffs people on various short term engagements. Leadership insists we're not a consulting company and gets angry if someone mentions the word consulting and then they run the place like a consulting company. Communication on central plans or key issues ranges from poor to non-existent. Much of what is said from the top of the house either doesn’t materialize or isn’t followed through. As such there is broad confusion over what the direction and purpose of the current company is. The overabundance of management layers and a culture that increasingly values process and org structure adherence over results means that very little actual output happens. There is strong potential but the current organization and overcontrolling style of the leadership often smothers out the usual energy found in smaller successful companies. CKM used to have that energy but under the new org structure that all feels gone.

Pros

CKM was my home for seven years. The company evolved significantly over time because leadership had the ambition and intelligence to identify where analytical software could transform operations. From the beginning of my tenure, CKM invested significant time and resources into training me as a full-stack Data Scientist. As the years went on, I was offered invaluable opportunities to lead projects with our clients, developing novel data analysis, dashboards, data pipelines and machine learning models. Eventually, CKM's flagship product became the main focus of my work, for which I and my colleagues had the independence to ship features that required solving challenging engineering problems and delivering value to our clients. I highly recommend CKM to prospective hires who enjoy being able to make a significant impact on the direction of a product, have relatively high autonomy and aspire to work on a technically strong and collaborative team. Additionally, the company is on a significant positive trajectory. As the product became more polished and tested against new customers in my last few years at the firm, the sales pipeline seemed to grow exponentially, which is a very good problem to have!

Cons

CKM is a small company, which, while allowing for more autonomy, means that some of the operational scaffolding that exists at medium-large size companies isn't necessarily in place yet.

Pros

With most of the staff in data science or engineering, there is a real sense of community here, in which people share similar interests and learn from each other. As others have mentioned, the company really encourages professional growth and collaboration, so there are ample opportunities to explore different aspects of data science and analytics. They also promote a company that is run by its employees, which allows you to influence what you think is important or exciting via the numerous committees they have set up. People are friendly and approachable, and you're really able to be yourself here. Overall, I think it's perfect for someone starting their career and especially for those that are interested in business and management. We have a really talented team, and really do provide a lot of value to our clients.

Cons

Things were shaky this year, as the company went through a reorg, becoming a corporation instead of an LLC, getting a name change, and investing a lot in product development - with many new engineering hires. The sales leadership they hired did not seem to work out, and as a result, there were few projects to keep people really busy. Due to all the changes, and general timing around bonuses, there were several departures, which had a big impact on morale. Most of the above has subsided, and there is a much better business outlook, but it had a lasting impact on the culture which we are still recovering from.
