Once a great company, now a skeleton of its formal self - IT Specialist CN Employee Review

Pros

There are some great workers here who still pride themselves and care about the future of this company. Working for the railroad, even as an IT worker, is incredibly interesting, especially when you realize it has much to do with the backbone of the economy.

Cons

A lot of the senior leadership is new from the last few years and they've been tactically pivoting strategies with major affects on the workforce including overworking, laying off, or removing bonuses from them. Senior leadership has been hiring consultants from their former companies and giving them the advantage rather than the existing workforce. The CEO is fully responsible for ripping the pride and diminishing the morale of the workforce. They make excellent politicians because they can speak well, but can't execute many of their objectives. They have a very "Everything will be better" or "Everything is great!" attitude, meanwhile the workforce in ALL aspects of the operation is suffering. When you speak up, they will non-chalantly, in public, tell you to go find a new job. The CEO admits him and his entourage is overpaid, and prides himself on this. Until the leadership is overhauled, this is definitely a company to stay away from, no matter the salary. And I fully expect a templated response from Public Affairs or HR, which just shows how much they care for their public image and workforce.

Pros

Pays decently well for first job out of college. My manager and team are very reasonable with expectations placed on new hires. Working after office hours (past 4:30pm) is extremely rare and only expected in emergencies.

Cons

Very slow and/or limited job growth potential. Promotions into middle management are almost purely based on reputation with middle managers who are largely people with previous field experience. This is very disadvantageous to direct-from-college hires like myself and even my current manager.
