Pros

Pay may be good if you are in Alberta or Manitoba but its subpar for Vancouver and Toronto. Nothing great really.

Cons

No work life balance, you may even get scheduled calls for weekend. Everybody in the management takes the weekend work for granted. It seems the whole organization is being punished to work here, the upward ladder is very slow and senior employees (in terms of years, not position) seem to be stuck in the industry.

Thank you for your feedback and for your hard work. When we recruit talent to our teams, we spend a lot of time going over the realities associated with the railroad operating 24/7/365 days a year, including how being on call can disrupt your family life and important events. CN is committed to providing a safe and respectful workplace for all employees. As such, it has developed a Policy to prevent and protect against workplace violence and harassment. At CN, all workplace violence and harassment is prohibited. Please visit the intranet and follow the recommendations in the Policy to deal with workplace harassment. We thank you for helping move our business and the economy forward. Please also share your thoughts during our regular pulse surveys.

Pros

Pays decently well for first job out of college. My manager and team are very reasonable with expectations placed on new hires. Working after office hours (past 4:30pm) is extremely rare and only expected in emergencies.

Cons

Very slow and/or limited job growth potential. Promotions into middle management are almost purely based on reputation with middle managers who are largely people with previous field experience. This is very disadvantageous to direct-from-college hires like myself and even my current manager.
