      More pluses than minuses - Senior Manager IT CN Employee Review

      Pros

      Fair to good compensation. Enormous opportunities to explore different skill areas if you are willing to go outside your comfort zone. Fair employment practices. Job can be as interesting as you make it. Huge moat as a business. Many sins can be hidden by this moat.

      Cons

      Difficult, but not impossible to be promoted rapidly. Changes in executive and senior ranks tend to bring in waves of trusted outside talent, many of whom are unsuitable, and which require time to weed out. Some difficulty in spotting and reluctance in addressing incompetence, but not more than usual for a large company. Company focussed on core business, so the greatest opportunities are within Operations, which tends to be inward facing. That really limits contributions and ideas from other segments of the company (e.g. it took a strike to show the company that it did not need a dedicated waybill processing centre in Ft. Rouge.)

      Pros

      Pays decently well for first job out of college. My manager and team are very reasonable with expectations placed on new hires. Working after office hours (past 4:30pm) is extremely rare and only expected in emergencies.

      Cons

      Very slow and/or limited job growth potential. Promotions into middle management are almost purely based on reputation with middle managers who are largely people with previous field experience. This is very disadvantageous to direct-from-college hires like myself and even my current manager.
