Pros
Leadership That Cares - First and foremost, the reason I joined CRB and continue to have full faith in my future here is because of the truly servant-leadership approach that leaders across our region take. I have experienced first-hand the level of emotional investment, empathy, respect, and energy that leaders pour into people at the individual and team levels. Having worked in a consulting agency in the past and having been behind the scenes of dozens and dozens of hiring team conversations across the county/state, I can say with full confidence that our regional leadership team cares and demonstrates respect for people, above all else. Culture and Core Values - Secondly, beyond the leadership, the whole of our team lives by our core values, which makes our culture such a strong one. Since day 1 I have felt integrated and welcomed into a community of people who are absolutely intelligent, innovative, incredibly hardworking, and fun to their core. I've spent some late nights or early mornings for meetings, and they're still *fun* because people take the time to build a personal rapport with one another and know how to crack a joke even during the most challenging situations. I have never felt as supported and motivated by a team as I have here. Fulfilling Work - Beyond our leadership and our culture, I have a deep appreciation for our work. The work is challenging, it's complex, it's fast-paced... it's not easy. We seem to thrive in that space, and I love the excitement and energy it brings. I love seeing ideas be taken seriously - including healthy disagreement - because it speaks to the humility, curiosity, and ultimately teamwork, that motivates our groups. It's okay to disagree here, and it's okay to say so. The goal is to do the absolute best work, not follow the same rules each time. I love the fluidity and autonomy that comes from that approach, especially when I think back to the rigidity and bureaucracy of previous workplaces. Career Development/Growth Opportunities - I have both facilitated for others, and personally experienced, the opportunity to change career paths and explore different paths at CRB. Career exploration, taking on new tasks, having opportunities to achieve stretch goals, and taking ownership of our own career paths, are fundamental parts of the CRB culture. I appreciate that our teams look far beyond just degrees and years, and give weight to people's potential, ability to learn, and willingness to contribute. The sky's the limit with internal development, and it's even better knowing there's not "one set path" each person must take. Employee Resource Groups/DEI - CRB is taking strides in establishing and supporting employee resource groups and DEI committees. Those groups allow us to reflect on how our systems and practices contribute to furthering diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how we can continue to improve those efforts. The employee resource groups are a really wonderful sub-community within CRB, and I've loved participating in them because they've provided important platforms for us to talk about critical social issues and events (and how they impact our workplace and what we can do to address them) and they've facilitated partnerships with coworkers from offices I may not have met otherwise. There will always be work to be done in that space since DEI efforts require sincere and continuous reflection and action, but I appreciate that the groups exist, the conversations are happening, the behaviors are evolving, and improvements are being implemented.
Cons
Actions during the current market - We, like every other firm in this market, are navigating changes to the economy, changes to the workforce, and changes to our own internal structure. We grew significantly in recent years, which brought a lot of positives - strong talented coworkers, new ideas, new expertise, etc. - but it also means that now more than ever, we need to be accountable for living by our core values and strengthening and enhancing our culture. I am confident in our ability to navigate these market downturns because of the level of expertise, entrepreneurialism, and passion our teams and leaders have, but I also recognize that this period of our growth requires leaning into the unknown, being willing to jump in beyond your typical scope/comfort zone, and being all hands on deck when it comes to supporting the needs of each project and the business as a whole. Frankly, I can't imagine any other AEC firm is experiencing something significantly different at this moment. Benefits - Our benefit package is "middle of the road" - we primarily offer high-deductible healthcare plans, which translates to higher monthly premiums and higher annual deductibles. We receive a very average/typical 401k employer match. Structure - We are not devoid of structure, but this is not a highly structured environment either. This is both a pro and a con. It allows people to have more independence, creativity, and autonomy in their work, but in some instances can mean doing a bit more work on the front end to establish new processes or ensure there's consistency across groups. Ultimately, I enjoy the level because it offers more room for impact and feels more exciting and engaging to participate in, but for people who thrive in a highly regimented and structured environment...this isn't the best place for you.
