Pros

If you have a need for medical benefits or a fixed benefit pension, then it's worth considering working here. Once you've passed probation it's nearly impossible to lose your job.

Cons

The culture here is very dysfunctional due to politics and lack of resources. The staff union (which you must either join or pay "fair share" fees to support) is completely useless and unsupportive. As a result, we make far less than other state workers with similar jobs and years of experience, and the impending budget issues in the state are sure to bring our salaries even lower soon. In IT, there are extensive territorial issues between the centralized and decentralized IT structures, so efficiency is not something we have, although in fairness it has improved somewhat of late.
