Pros
I enjoy my co-workers and I get to work from home when not traveling. You get paid the federal rate for mileage. I work 8-5 so I get to take an hour lunch break if/when I have time.
Cons
Management doesn’t listen to feedback, keeps contingent workers who don’t do assigned work leaving more for the employees, belittle employees, don’t get back with policy questions or clarifications, show favoritism… the tools given to us to do our job are often down, they don’t update, they’re slow, and you’re punished if the lack of working tools interferes with getting assigned work completed. Meetings. Lots of meetings and “education” interrupting work flow. You are forced to take a member to interdisciplinary rounds, and if you can’t find someone, you need to figure out a problem and just fake it. Rounds are not helpful, they don’t benefit the members, and take up a lot of time that could be spent doing more meaningful tasks. Parmacy input is generally helpful though. The jobs is actually all about care planning. The care plans are supposed to be member centered but are actually centered strictly to pass state audits/metric. Requirements for the care plans change frequently. The amount of documentation is unbelievable and the time allotted to complete it is unrealistic. Because you are documenting for auditors and because the software is not user friendly, you have to document the same things in multiple places but everything has to be “personalized”. Case managers are expected to go into unsafe neighborhoods and homes and if we feel unsafe, we can take a coworker… if a coworker has time and is willing to go. We are also expected to find and be the contact point person for getting new providers for the benefits we are supposed to be providing our members. Time is not allotting to spend hours a day finding providers willing to work with us and no extra recognition or pay for case managers to go above and beyond to find providers or for going above and beyond for any reason. Most case managers get a 3% raise each year, usually less. It’s extremely difficult to get a 4 or higher so everyone just “meets expectations”. Annual raises don’t meet the rate of inflation or cost of living increases and so every year you are essentially taking a pay cut. The medical coverage is meh. I’ve had better and at a lower cost.
