Pros

American Funds has an excellent training program. It was very formalized and they was lots of support as you were learning your job. The facilities were great and they obviously put a lot of effort into making sure the employees were taken care of and happy. They have an on-site cafe, a room for nursing mothers which was stocked with nursing equipment and a refrigerator, free tickets for entertainment events and other types of perks. There was also a definite path to move up and lots of opportunities not only in the area of Norfolk but at other locations if you were willing to relocate.

Cons

Although they made great effort to accommodate employees and create a safe and pleasant workplace, they almost went to far in making sure that it was politically correct. You could actually be called in and reprimanded for making negative comments. It actually happened to one of the ladies in our training class. I can't remember her exact comment, probably because it was just a sarcastic comment she made, but she was talked to about it by the trainers. Also be aware that because you are working in the mutual funds industry, mandatory overtime is usually required during tax season.

Pros

The bonuses and CSRP of 15% as well as many benefits are unmatched. I enjoy many of my colleagues and have made life long friends.

Cons

It was a great place to work and many will continue to feel that way until they are affected like those of us in the Norfolk Virginia office. There is no loyalty from the company and people are replaced either by a “vision“ of technology that doesn’t yet even exist within the organization or by cheap labor “offshore“. I thought I would retire from here and now I find myself out of a job after over 20 years before the end of 2027.
