Pros

You’ll build strong relationships with peers who are doing their best under difficult conditions.

Cons

I’m leaving this review because I wish someone had been this honest before I joined. The massive number of open positions you see right now is not a sign of growth or momentum — in my opinion, it’s a symptom of people fleeing an environment that has become unsustainable. From my experience, Carnegie is no longer the human-focused, values-driven company it once claimed to be. The culture feels hollowed out, replaced by what many employees perceived as private-equity-style decision-making: profit over people, optics over integrity, and constant instability masquerading as “restructuring.” The heart of this organization has been stripped away. Tenure, excellence, and loyalty don’t seem to matter here. I watched high-performing, deeply committed colleagues have their careers upended overnight. Meanwhile, a select few continued to rise through rapid promotions and title bumps that didn’t align with the results they delivered. To many of us, it felt like favoritism and internal politics ruled the advancement process — not fairness, not merit, and certainly not transparency. The leadership structure is bloated at the top while the people doing the real work face burnout, shifting targets, and little clarity. The so-called “growth paths” and professional development messages were, in my experience, nothing more than smoke and mirrors. The gap between what the company markets externally and what employees actually experience is staggering. If you’re considering applying, don’t be distracted by the branding, the buzzwords, or the polished image. Look deeper. Ask why so many people left. Ask how often these “restructures” happen. Ask why morale has been slipping for years. My honest advice: do yourself a favor and steer clear. This is not the Carnegie it once pretended to be, and it’s not a place I would recommend to anyone looking for stability, respect, or genuine career growth.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide this feedback. We are saddened to hear that the recent shifts in our organizational structure felt like a departure from our core values. Carnegie is indeed in a period of significant transition as we scale, and we recognize that growing pains can feel like a loss of the original culture to those who have been with us for many years. Our leadership team is committed to bridging the gap between our external goals and the internal employee experience. Your comments on burnout and clarity are being shared with our executive team as we work to refine our professional development paths and ensure our “people-first” mission remains a reality. Please reach out to me at hr@carnegiehighered.com with any questions or comments.

Pros

The people are truly kind, collaborative, and mission driven. Everyone genuinely cares about supporting higher education and helping clients succeed, and that shows up in how teams work together day to day. There are a lot of smart people here, and the culture is collaborative rather than competitive. It feels like everyone wants each other to win. There are strong opportunities to work cross functionally, learn new skills, and try new ideas. There is also real room to fail, test new approaches, and learn without fear.

Cons

The pace is very fast. The work is good and meaningful, but it can feel intense at times. I also wish compensation were higher, especially given the speed and level of responsibility.

Thank you for taking the time to share such positive feedback! It is incredibly rewarding to hear that our mission to support higher education resonates so strongly with your day-to-day work. We are very proud of our collaborative team, and knowing that you feel encouraged to cross-train, innovate, and try new approaches without fear of failure is the best compliment we could ask for. We hear your feedback regarding the fast-paced intensity of the work and compensation. We know how hard our teams work, and we are continually looking at ways to ensure our salaries remain competitive and that our workloads remain manageable during busy seasons. If you ever have specific ideas on how we can improve the day-to-day pace for your team, please feel free to share them with us at hr@carnegiehighered.com.

Pros

The client portfolio is genuinely interesting, and the peer-level team is incredibly talented, collaborative, and supportive. There are great people working here at the execution level, and you will build strong professional relationships.

Cons

Retention and management are major issues. Turnover is incredibly high, particularly within the first 90 days for new strategists. The company conducts surveys regarding capacity, but internal data is ignored—workloads routinely exceed promised limits (e.g., managing 12 clients when internal models cap roles at 8). Furthermore, the management style leans heavily toward negative critique rather than constructive coaching, creating a lack of psychological safety. Internal mobility is also poorly handled. Toxic culture.
